TEACHING MUSICAL THEATER TO THE NEXT GENERATION

The KID CITY THEATER COMPANY was founded in 1987 by singer/dancer/actress Wendy Tonken who wanted to expose children to the great American musicals she loved so much as a child. Classes are held at the historic 13th Street Repertory Theater in Greenwich Village.

Using the actual stage as a classroom, students learn acting technique and performance skills at the same time. Through singing, dancing, acting improvisations, and theater games, the kids really open up to performing and develop a new appreciation and love for musical theater. In order for each student to experience what it’s like to perform in musical theater (as well as what’s involved behind the scenes) each class works on a mini version of a classic Broadway show which is shared with family and friends at the end of the year.

Although we do not do commercial productions, our class projects are fully mounted on stage with costumes and scenery. Although some students work professionally, no prior performing experience is required to join.  Wendy firmly believes that every child should be given the opportunity to discover his or her own talent.
